Obituary: SHARON SPEAKER MCDOWELL

 

Sharon S. McDowell, 71, of Wilmington, NC, died Tuesday, November 13, 2007, at the Commons at Brightmore after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimers disease.

She was bom in Peru, IN, September 3, 1936, daughter of the late Glenn Martin Speaker and Evalois Showalter Speaker.

Mrs. McDowell was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church. She graduated from New Hanover High School and earned her nursing degree from Duke University. She was a registered nurse, and retired from Cape Fear Memorial Hospital in Wilmington with twenty-five years of service. She enjoyed boating, fishing, and walking along the beach, and is remembered as a loving wife, great Mom, and loving grandmother to her three grandchildren.

Surviving is her husband of thirty-eight years, Ray McDowell; two daughters, Melissa Wright and husband William and Jennifer Langley and husband Daniel, all of Wilmington; and three grandchildren, Grainger Wright, Joshua Wright, and Lauren Wright.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 16, 2007, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel by the Rev. Msgr. Matthew Hendrick. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 10:00 a.m. Friday until the service hour. At other times friends may be received at the family residence.
